Course description
Introduction
If you want to take your first step towards a career in the sport and fitness industry, this is the course for you. We will support your personal development through the acquisition of skills and knowledge in sport, exercise and fitness. This qualification also allows you to gain transferrable skills that employers look for in employees. Some of the skills you will need to demonstrate and develop throughout the qualification include:

Leadership skills
We combine class-based study with exercise, fitness and sport training and learn through visits to sporting events, like premiership football stadiums. You will also experience volunteering opportunities like coaching at primary schools and assisting in competitions like the London youth games. This will provide you with invaluable experience of what it's like to lead sporting activities and sport events. This experience can increase your employability and has in the past led to part-time paid work for our students too.
You will be studying a total of 5 units, the units that you will be studying include:
Taking part in sport
Sports coaching
Personal exercise and fitness
Effect of exercise on human body systems
Health and nutrition
Assessment
You will be assessed through practical performance and a portfolio of work that you will build up over the duration of the course. You will also need to undertake at least 35 hours mandatory work experience.
Next Steps
Improve your job prospects by moving on to a Level 2 course. At South Thames College we offer sports courses up to university level so there are lots of opportunities for progression.

Expenses
Three GCSEs in relevant subjects or other related qualifications and experience. A reference from previous school/college and must demonstrate that you practice at least one sport or fitness train.
