Course description
Introduction
This course will introduce you to the skills you need to become a community interpreter. Once you've completed this course successfully you can progress onto Community Interpreting 2 - Level 3 to gain a qualification that's recognised by many public service organisations.
You'll cover:
Interpreting techniques and models
An interpreter's skills and qualities
Confidentiality and impartiality issues
An overview of public services
How to support interviews and the importance of pre-interviews
Role-plays to practise and strengthen your skills.
Assessment
You'll be assessed through nine written assignments and a final test. You need to complete these successfully to progress onto Community Interpreting 2 - Level 3.
Next Steps
After completing the course you can progress onto Community Interpreting Level 3 Part 3 and gain the qualification you need to go into work as an interpreter.

You must be 18 or over and: Be able to speak English fluently (equivalent to Cambridge First Certificate or ESOL Level 2) Be able to read, write and speak fluently in your community language - most students are native speakers of this. The community languages accepted to study the course with us are: Arabic; Bengali; Bulgarian; Farsi; French; Greek; Hindi; Italian; Japanese; Mandarin; Mongolian; Nepalese, Polish; Portuguese; Russian; Spanish; Turkish; Urdu; Romanian; Somali. You must attend an initial assessment and induction session before you enrol in any of the Community Interpreting 1 - Level 3 courses.
