Course description
This course aims at developing students’ ability to increase their effectiveness in communicating with others and to express themselves by using both idiomatic and colloquial language. The course pre-supposes completion of two years of part-time study of Chinese (assuming one session per week across three terms for each year of study) or the equivalent.
Students are given ample practice on the use of proverbs and idiomatic expressions and the extended meanings of directional complements. By the end of the course, students are able to negotiate an airport and hotel facilities in Chinese, to check-in and check-out, describe local foods, etc. They are able to solve problems whilst travelling and to use Chinese confidently. Around 140 new words are introduced in this course, bringing the number of vocabulary items to around 850.
