Course description
This is a course aimed at developing basic skills for reading and writing the Arabic script. This can be useful for those who can speak already but want to continue learning Arabic beyond simply speaking and for heritage learners and new Muslims who would like to learn the basics with the eventual aim of reading the holy Quran.
Students will learn Arabic letters, their shapes and sounds and will be able to read short, simple texts by the end of the course. They will be also learning how to write and will be exposed to the different writing fonts/styles including the Usmani (Quranic script).
In class, students are encouraged to interact with each other in pairs or in small groups. Outside of the class, participants are asked to put in sufficient effort between sessions to undertake the necessary consolidation of in-class learning so that progress targets can be achieved. This means about 2 hours of guided self-study each day.
Method
The course is taught in English and Arabic and materials will be provided by the teacher. No previous knowledge of Arabic script is needed.
Class size is limited to fifteen to allow for intensive interactive practice and individual support.
Materials
All materials will be provided by the teacher.
Duration: 1 week, 10 hours 16th - 20th July 2018
