Course description
This one-year courses are designed for school leavers, aged 16 to 18, who are aiming for careers in childcare settings such as primary and nursery schools, private day nurseries, playgroups, creches and youth centres. Students will be taught in a friendly conducive teaching and learning environment through lectures, group discussions/debates, assignment workshops, visiting speakers and individual support by friendly and caring tutors. The first year results in the award of a Certificate at Level 3 and the second year results in the award of a Diploma, a qualification valued by employers and universities alike. Units include: An Introduction to Working with Children; Development from Conception to Age 16; Supporting Children; Keeping Children Safe; Play and Learning in Children’s Education; Caring for Children; Additional/Functional Skills include Literacy, ICT and Numeracy.
Students will be assessed through assignment tasks, portfolio work, practice evidence records, practice evidence record diary and professional development profiles. Exams consist of a research task and a short answer paper on a seen case study. Enrichment activities are an integral part of the course and include fun activities such as trips, visits, fundraising for local community, hospitals and charities. Participation in community work placements in local schools and childcare settings is compulsory. On successful completion students will gain a Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education, which will prepare students for the next level of progression to university to study a Foundation Degree or BA Honours Degree in Early Years. The course will also prepare you for employment in a variety of childcare settings such as primary and nursery schools, private day nurseries, playgroups, creches and youth centres.

Suitability - Who should attend?
You will need four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, in academic subjects, two of which must be in English and Maths, or a Level 2 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education, or NVQ in Childcare Learning and Development. You’ll also need a DBS check to complete work placements as part of your course.
