Course description
Awareness is the key to prevention!
Welcome to the crucial and insightful course on “Safety Focus Four-Struck-by Hazards” designed specifically for the construction industry. This course is the fourth instalment in our comprehensive “Construction Safety Focus Four Hazards” series. For a well-rounded understanding and to complete the series, we encourage you to explore the additional courses.
The “Struck-by Hazards in Construction Safety Focus” course is designed to provide comprehensive training on the identification, prevention, and mitigation of struck-by hazards in construction sites. This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize potential struck-by hazards, implement preventive measures, and respond effectively to minimize the risks associated with being struck by moving objects or falling loads.
Course Topics:
Introduction to Struck-by Hazards: Participants will gain an understanding of the types of struck-by hazards commonly encountered in construction sites, including being struck by swinging objects, moving vehicles, falling materials, and dropped loads.
Types of Cranes and Rigging: This topic focuses on the various types of cranes used in construction, such as mobile cranes, tower cranes, overhead cranes, and jib cranes. Participants will learn about their functions, features, and potential hazards associated with their operation.
Safe Practices for Crane Operations: Participants will be introduced to safe work practices for crane operations, including guarding exposed moving parts, blocking swing radius, inspecting rigging equipment, removing defective equipment from service, and ensuring proper communication between crane operators and signal persons.
Prevention of Struck-by Hazards: This section covers preventive measures to mitigate struck-by hazards, such as maintaining clear work zones, using barricades and signage, securing materials to prevent sliding or falling, and implementing effective traffic control measures.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Participants will learn about the importance of wearing appropriate PPE, such as hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots, to protect themselves from potential struck-by hazards.
Hazard Recognition and Response: This topic focuses on developing hazard recognition skills to identify potential struck-by hazards in the construction environment. Participants will also learn effective response strategies, including emergency procedures and the importance of clear communication during critical situations.

Outcome / Qualification etc.
By the end of the “Struck-by Hazards in Construction Safety Focus” course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and identify various types of struck-by hazards commonly encountered in construction sites.
- Understand the characteristics, functions, and potential hazards associated with different types of cranes and rigging equipment.
- Implement safe work practices for crane operations, including guarding exposed moving parts, inspecting rigging equipment, and communicating effectively with crane operators.
- Apply preventive measures to mitigate struck-by hazards, such as maintaining clear work zones, securing materials, and implementing traffic control measures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and its proper use to protect against struck-by hazards.
- Develop hazard recognition skills to identify potential struck-by hazards in the construction environment and respond appropriately.
- Understand emergency procedures and the importance of clear communication during critical situations involving struck-by hazards.
By successfully completing the course, participants will enhance their ability to work safely in construction sites, minimize the risks of struck-by incidents, and contribute to a safer working environment for themselves and their colleagues
Upon completing all four courses in the “Safety Focus Four Hazards” series, students will be endowed with the skills to:
- Identify common focus four hazards in their work environment.
- Understand and describe the nature of these focus four hazards.
- Implement measures to protect themselves from these hazards.
- Recognize the responsibilities of their employers to mitigate these focus four hazards.
In less than three hours, this course helps provide the skills and competencies necessary to identify and mitigate construction-related hazards, effectively manage risks, and promote a culture of safety in the construction industry. By the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge and tools to create a safer working environment, protect themselves and their colleagues, and contribute to the overall success of construction projects.
