Course description
Lettering & Calligraphy - All Levels: Lettering & Calligraphy Formal and Modern Script
This course will introduce students to the traditional forms of a script of your choice. The course will cover script analysis, exploration of different inks, pens and papers. For improvers and advanced students the course will offer a deeper understanding of a script structure, script variations and flourishes to produce a wide range of effects.
The course will be started from studying calligraphy tools and materials. There will be exploration of different inks, pens and papers, as well as advice on how to choose the best materials for your own work.
We will look at 4-6 historical handwriting styles during the course and will continue with a deep studying of Roman Capitals. We will focus on spacing and letterform structure.
Upon completion of the first part we will continue with deep analysis of your preferred script. We will focus on understanding the origins of the script and its purpose. Students will analyse the structure of a script, its key characteristics and how it was written. You will produce your own personal alphabet based on your studies, which can be used in your future projects.
Those who would like to improve their skills will be able to focus on weight, height, compression and slope. Variables such as branches and serifs will be examined along with an exploration of the smallest changes that can drastically change the appearance of letterforms. We will practice making the forms regular and fluent, designing the variations by identifying and incorporating your own unique modern style.

script/rhythm variations in a concertina book;
