What do I need to know?
We will cover the essential universal elements of storytelling: plot structure, characterisation, setting, use of language, dialogue and theme. We will then look at everything from short stories, flash fiction, novels, TV and film scriptwriting to stage plays. There will also be advice on the publishing industry and how to find a publisher or broadcaster for your work. You will be encouraged and stimulated to write your own fiction over the course, whether from your ongoing work or ideas you find as the course develops. Many students are able to write a complete short story over the ten weeks. We will discuss aspects of theory but much of your learning will be from your own efforts. We will look at the work of the great classic and contemporary writers and listen to recordings and video clips. Whatever your level of experience, you will come out of the course inspired, full of ideas and with your skills and confidence enhanced.
