Course description
Abstract Painting - Beginners: This course is designed for you to explore the power of line, colour and texture to develop your own abstract painting.
Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone, be challenged, be bold, and have fun!
We will examine the development of abstraction from cubism through to examples of contemporary artists who use the abstract language in the composition of their artwork.
During the course we will look at artistic movements who used abstraction such as surrealism, minimalism, lyrical abstraction, abstract expressionism, constructivism and conceptualism. The lessons will be structured so that students can experiment with their own painting using examples from art history to inform their artistic development.
In the classes students will be encouraged to develop their own style and experiment with painting media with a particular emphasis on acrylics and water based media. We will also look at criteria and discuss elements that make a good abstract painting, this may help students make decisions that improve the quality of their own painting output.
Course outcomes:
You will explore line, tone, composition, colour and paint handling
You will learn about the history of abstract art by looking at different periods in art history and focusing on particular abstract artists
You will practise ways of painting expressively
You will learn how mix colours from the three primary colours and three earth tones.
You will learn to use your brush in a decisive manner
You will talk about your work and others works in informal group critiques
