Personal Track Safety (PTS)
The Personal Track Safety Course (PTS Training) is the entry level qualification for those who wish to start a career in the railway industry. The PTS Course can cover AC (overhead wire) and DCCR (third rail). The course is best suited to people who are looking to work trackside (e.g. in train stations, platforms or down the banks of the track).

Suitability - Who should attend?
To apply for a place on a Real Skills PTS course, you need to undergo medical, drug and alcohol testing to ensure you’re fit to work. You’ll also need to have made arrangements for sponsorship with a reputable rail company – this is usually your current employer or the company you’re going to work for. We are able to assist you with information to help you to approach potential sponsors.
Other pre-requisites include:
- Completed booking form
- Completed online assessment (e-learning)
- A good understanding of both written and spoken English language
Outcome / Qualification etc.
On completion of PTS training, you will be awarded a PTS card or ‘Sentinel card’ and the PTS AC qualification will be added to this within 48 hours.
The course aims to instruct staff as to how to determine their responsibilities when working on or near a railway line. By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:
- The main purpose of our PTS course is to help workers understand the systems designed to keep them safe – avoiding the risk of electrocution from overhead power lines and being hit by a train.
- Personal Track Safety also teaches candidates how to follow relevant instructions when on or near the railway line, following the Safe System of Work.
