Introduction to Drawing & Painting
The course can be taken a term at a time or as a three term programme. Autumn term: Introduction to drawing and painting (acrylics) 50:50 drawing to painting. In three projects we will cover the basics of TONE, SPACE, COLOUR. Working mainly from studio set-ups. Focus on observational skills as well as familiarity with the potential of materials. Spring term: Introduction to oil painting. 80:20 amount of painting to drawing. Introducing the versatile medium of oils through structured exercises. In addition to tonal and colour painting will look at texture, glazing and painting on different surfaces. We will work from still life set-ups and photographs. Summer term: Oil painting - city & landscapes. 70:30 painting to drawing. A chance to develop oil painting further. We will explore elements such as composition, using sketches to investigate a subject for painting. Developing paint application through use of palette knife and big brush. Drawing on location together with photographs.

For beginners and a refresher course for students with some experience.

What will I achieve? In addition to developing observational skills students will use a wide range of drawing media and acrylic and then oil paints. You will be encouraged to develop a practical understanding of the properties of these media. We will also look at the work of other artists through slides shows
Course delivery details
Materials Required: What to bring to the first session: Autumn term: Bring pencils (3B-6B) and an eraser, sharpener masking tape or bulldog clips and one sheet of A2 white cartridge paper to the first session. A full materials list will be provided during the first session Spring & Summer terms: You will be sent an oil painting materials list.
