Contemporary Drawing
Unlock your creativity with a program of exciting drawing projects! The course will help you explore the potential of different drawing media and activities. You will be working from a range of sources, using observation and imagination. The program will include site visits, online and physical, contextual studies in the form of talks and discussion, individual and group feedback from the tutor.

This course is for students with some experience and an interest in trying different processes and materials.

This class offers students with some previous experience the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and approaches to the use of different traditional and non-traditional drawing media. The course will guide students through the practice and principles of essential formal drawing qualities: line, tone, texture, composition and colour. Sessions working from observation will also move to supporting students in developing an individual voice, to develop work from research, experiment and imagination. Contemporary drawing practice pushes at the boundaries of what drawing is. Some sessions will involve paint, printing, collage, stitch and more.
Course delivery details
Materials Required: Most of the materials below are available cheaply in the shop at Putney School of Art. The following list of basic materials will get you started: A pad of good quality A2 sized cartridge paper - these sheets can be divided into smaller pieces. Windsor and Newton drawing ink: black, deep red, ultramarine and canary yellow. Quink ink in black or blue-black. Ballpoint pens in black, blue and red. Pencils – 2B, 4B, 6B Willow charcoal, mixed widths Conte sticks (not pencils) in white, black and sanguine (brown red) Soft graphite stick – 6B or 4B An eraser – plastic is better than a putty rubber Sharpener A craft knife and scissors Masking tape A can of fixative An apron PVA glue and / or a glue stick.
