Course description
This course aims to provide participants with the critical and practical skills and confidence required to analyse, plan and manage the financial aspects of humanitarian and development in Non-Governmental Organisations. The course uses brief presentations to introduce key aspects of each topic, seminars to explore practical approaches to NGO financial management and practical activities and case studies to develop key skill areas such as budgeting, accounting, reporting and risk assessment. Student learning is supported by self-study, internet-based research and reading to broaden understanding of key issues.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Whilst specifically designed for workers in the humanitarian sector, the skills taught could apply to anybody working in areas of financial management, eg. Charities, local councils, small businesses, university staff. Proof of English to IELTS 6.5

Upon successful completion of this programme, delegates will be able to:
- Define and critically analyse the key features of a financing strategy for a financially sustainable NGO
- Identify and respond to the challenges that NGO managers of humanitarian and development programmes face in relation to management of financial resources and donor funds
- Define the critical factors for successful management of donor funds
- Implement effective financial systems based on the four building blocks of financial management: accounting records, internal control, financial planning and financial monitoring
