Course description
The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Skills for Life course is for students who are 16-19 years of age and have recently arrived in the UK or have already successfully achieved ESOL at Entry Level 3. This intensive English course will develop your skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking English. As well as studying ESOL you will have the opportunity to study up to two GCSE subjects from a list of options depending on your future goals. Specialist ESOL teachers teach your courses and in many lessons there is a teaching assistant who will be there to help you and your peers.
On the ESOL Horizons Level 1 course all students study the same core set of qualifications. These are:
- Trinity ESOL Skills for Life - Level 1
- A weekly group tutorial
- Students will either study the 9-1 GCSE in Citizenship or a Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development
- If students have not achieved a grade 4 in GCSE maths they will be required to study maths at the appropriate level.
- There is an option for some students to study one additional GCSE from the following options GCSE Business Studies; GCSE Biology; GCSE Chemistry; GCSE Film Studies; GCSE History or GCSE Media Studies
- The Trinity ESOL Skills for Life course is assessed by three exams a speaking exam, a reading exam and a writing exam. The other qualifications are assessed by written exams at the end of the academic year.
If you successfully pass all of the exams at Entry then you are able to continue the following year on the full-time GCSE course or another Level 2 course at Kingston College.

Suitability - Who should attend?
A tutor will meet with you for a talk and we will check your level of English by getting you to do an English test. If you have been studying in this country, we will ask your last school or college for a reference. If you have been studying abroad we would like to see any references or certificates that you may have; however if you are unable to provide these, do not worry.
