Course description
The units listed below are indicative of the course content; you will also need to achieve some standard study skills units:
• Maths for Engineering including Algebraic Manipulation and Methods, Trigonometry, Logarithms and Calculus.
• Engineering Studies including Statics and Dynamics, Electrical Circuit Theory and Basic Electronic Skills, Engineering Materials, Health and Safety at Work, Introduction to CAD and Computer Aided Design.
To obtain a pass in this Access course, a student will have to achieve a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. Total credits required: 60 for the Diploma.
The Access to HE Diploma is an ideal course for adults (anyone aged 19+) who have a keen interest in the study of engineering in Higher Education.
This course is aimed at those with employment experience wishing to join a degree or equivalent HE course and is suitable for students who need further qualifications to progress in their careers or those wishing to change career having studied Maths and Science earlier in their life and now wish to pursue further formal study in engineering.
This includes learners wishing to change subject area having already gained some academic or vocational qualifications, learners who have studied but not completed academic or vocational subjects, or where suitable grades to enter university were not gained or learners who have been out of education for some time and who now wish to re-commence their studies.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Due to the demands of this course, students need to be able to demonstrate sufficient and relevant background engineering knowledge as well as Level 2 in English and Maths. A successful interview and screening test are required as well as a satisfactory reference. Applicants are now required to have GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C or above. This course requires a maturity of approach as well as a high level of commitment and candidates must be prepared to devote serious time to their studies.
