Training Course Content
The course contains the following five topics:
1 – Climate change
We start by learning about climate change. You will understand the climate change process and its impact on the environment. You will learn about the role of greenhouse gases on our planet and how humans are causing a rise in these gases. The topic also covers how the carbon cycle works.
2 – International and UK government action
This topic is about actions being taken by governments and organisations around the world to reduce global warming and make systems sustainable for the future. You will learn about the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), COP conferences and the drive for Net Zero. The topic explains the terms carbon neutrality, carbon offsetting and carbon credits. It highlights UK legislation and taxes that target the environment.
3 – Energy efficiency
The third topic is about energy efficiency. It describes how your organisation, and you as an individual, can create a more energy-efficient workplace. You will learn about the benefits of energy efficiency. You will also learn about ways organisations can reduce energy usage for lighting, heating, water heating and IT equipment.
4 – Water
We move on to outlining the importance of water and ways to reduce water consumption. You will learn about the problems with water around the world and about water waste in the UK. The topic also covers water-saving techniques that businesses can use to save money and keep the environment healthy, as well as the legal responsibilities businesses have for their water waste.
5 – Waste and litter
The final topic is about the environmental impact of waste and litter. It identifies the harmful effects of waste, the problems caused by litter and the devastating environmental damage cigarette butts cause. The topic also covers the legal responsibilities businesses have for their waste and the importance for businesses that create waste to use the hierarchy of waste.

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 aims to protect the environment with controls that work towards reducing air pollution, carbon emissions, and harmful waste disposal practices. All commercial waste must be stored, removed, and disposed of in line with the obligations covered in the act. The Climate Change Act 2008 is the basis for the UK’s approach to tackling and responding to climate change. It commits the UK to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The Companies Act 2006 requires all UK quoted companies to report on their global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual Directors’ Report.
The course assessment comprises of 15 questions drawn from question banks. This dynamic approach ensures that learners receive a new set of questions with each assessment, making it suitable for both initial and refresher training.
