Course description
This course is designed for students who have no previous knowledge of Spanish. The aim of the course is to develop your ability to understand and respond to spoken Spanish. The language learnt will be that used in authentic situations, such as in restaurants and hotels. Although the emphasis of the course is on conversation, you will also learn basic grammar, so that you can begin to manipulate the language. You will be able to write short paragraphs related to the topics learnt. Understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture and customs is encouraged throughout. This course feeds into Beginners Level 2 and then Beginners Level 3 in subsequent terms. By the end of the course students will have covered the following topics: introductions and greetings, the Alphabet, Numbers 1-100, giving basic personal details (nationality, job, age etc.), talking about your family, ordering drinks and food in a restaurant, talking about your town or city, and grammar points: regular present tense verbs, some irregular verbs (ser, tener, estar, hay), gender, adjectives and their agreements, asking questions, use of the negative, the definite and indefinite articles, ordinal numbers, possessive and demonstrative adjectives, personal pronouns.
