Course description
This course is suitable for those who have already studied Portuguese for one or two terms (about 40 hours) or those who have some previous knowledge of Portuguese and can express ideas in the present tense. It is based on a communicative approach and aims to develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the foreign language. The course covers the basic language needed for everyday situations. It aims to enable students to understand and use Portuguese effectively for purposes of practical communication, to develop some understanding of grammar and to offer insights into the culture of Portuguese speaking countries, mainly Brazil and Portugal. By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to explore and practise: Going to the doctor’s; talking about past events; talking about holidays in the past; describing places and people; communicating in short everyday situations in the present and past; giving instructions. You will have learnt some basic grammar, in particular: the past tense of regular verbs; past tense of some irregular verbs (ser, estar, ter, ir, fazer); Imperative; Adverbs, prepositions and possessive pronouns.
