Course description
This course will suit beginners who have no previous knowledge of German. The aim of the course is to develop your ability to understand and respond to spoken and written German. It will help you to communicate effectively in authentic situations, such as in restaurants, at the railway station and shops. It will help you to ask for information in various contexts, to respond to people and talk about yourself, your family, your home life and your leisure time. The focus of the course is on conversation and you will learn the basics of German grammar so that you can begin to manipulate the language. You will develop the listening skill to understand what people say and gradually be ready to cope with the unexpected. You will be encouraged to build up your own vocabulary lists and to consolidate material covered in class between lessons. By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to: learn the basics of German pronunciation; Use numbers 0-100; carry out social interaction in German in a variety of situations, for example: giving personal details, presenting yourself, shopping, speaking about food, ordering food and drink, asking for the time and opening hours, arranging a date, speaking about your house, household chores and looking for a flat, speaking about preferences, the weather and hobbies, expressing wishes; develop your understanding of German through listening to recordings of native speakers; read simple notices, signs and information, gain some understanding of basic German grammar including spelling and punctuation, the present tense, articles and cases, word order.
