Nipple pain is a common issue experienced by many mothers during their breastfeeding journey. If left unresolved, it can lead to the early discontinuation of breastfeeding. This CPD module investigates the underlying causes of nipple pain, discusses strategies for its prevention, and outlines available treatment options.
How common is nipple pain in breastfeeding mothers?
The reported incidence of nipple pain in breastfeeding women ranges from 34 to 96%. In a UK survey of 1084 women, overhalf (52%) experienced nipple pain.
Nipple pain occurs most often in the first week postpartum, when breastfeeding is being established and babies are feeding often - this can be every hour in the first few days and at least 8-12 times a day in the first weeks. Nipple pain tends to peak in severity on the third day and reduces to mild levels within 7-10 days, but sometimes it persists.
