Course summary
This course aims to cover all aspects of nursing care in the management of the patient undergoing thoracic surgery from pre-operative evaluation and stabilisation through to advanced monitoring techniques post operatively. We will also look at the surgical nursing required during surgery itself and how to assist the veterinary surgeon when scrubbed in.
Specific areas to be covered
Anaesthesia protocols and patient preparation for surgery
Surgical approaches to the thoracic cavity and the role of the scrub nurse during surgery
Understand placement and management of thoracic drains including continuous and intermittent drainage
Post-operative nursing considerations including recovery from anaesthesia, advanced monitoring parameters and analgesic protocols
