Course description
Emergency medicine and critical care in veterinary medicine have advanced greatly over recent years. Most emergency medicine is carried out in general practice, so it is important that nurses and vets have appropriate training as well as the equipment and facilities to deal with these cases. In the heat of an emergency, rapid access to the appropriate knowledge and equipment directly affects prognosis for the patient.
This course is tailored to cover the spectrum of medical emergencies that might present in general practice – from triage to treatment.
Specific areas to be covered
Urinary Emergencies: Urinary obstruction, acute renal failure
Cardiovascular Emergencies: Hypovolaemic shock, haemorrhage, pericardial effusion
Haematologic Emergencies: IMHA
Respiratory Emergencies: Feline asthma, pleural effusion, pneumothorax
Alimentary Emergencies: Oesophageal foreign bodies, acute pancreatitis
Endocrine/Metabolic Emergencies: Addisonian crisis, diabetic ketoacidosis
