Course description
This course aims to discuss various types of emergency surgery. It will cover a brief amount of the initial care, what we need to do as the patient comes through the door, but will focus on the surgical procedure in theatre and how we are best able to help these critical patients. GDVs, patients with airway compromise and orthopaedic trauma cases will be amongst the procedures to be discussed. Although as veterinary nurses we are not performing the surgery it is important to understand the surgical procedure to be able to nurse these patients effectively during the peri and post-operative period.
Delegates will be encouraged to bring their own scenarios and cases, for specific discussions on how to treat these patients, what we have learnt and what we may do differently next time (or not!!) and what has worked well in certain situations.
