Early Years Educator
Early Years Educators play a key role in ensuring that young children learn and develop well, and are kept healthy and safe. They work in a range of settings including full day care, children’s centres, and preschools.
You will plan and supervise child initiated and adult led activities, support children to develop numeracy and language skills, have key person responsibility, observe each child and shape their learning experience to reflect their observations, meet the care needs of the individual child, work in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child

Course delivery details
Knowledge Test
The knowledge test can be completed electronically, - computer based or paper based
The maximum duration of the knowledge test is 60 minutes
The knowledge test will consist of 35 multiple-choice questions
A score of 66% is required for a pass - 23 of 35 questions answered correctly Of the 23 questions answered correctly, these include 5 of 5 questions relating to safeguarding policies and procedures, including child protection
The knowledge test must be taken in a controlled exam environment, in the presence of an invigilator
Professional Discussion Underpinned by Portfolio of Evidence
Portfolio submission must include:
- Minimum of 10 pieces of evidence submitted - one per duty - up to a maximum of 12
- Evidence must be mapped against the KSBs being assessed by the professional discussion
- Evidence must relate to ‘real’ work completed; evidence from simulated activities is not allowed
The portfolio of evidence will not be formally assessed, it will be used by the independent assessor to inform the professional discussion
The professional discussion will be a 1-to-1 conversation between the independent assessor and apprentice, underpinned by the portfolio which will be available during the discussion
The professional discussion will last for a minimum of 90 minutes
A minimum of 10 questions will be asked during the discussion to assess depth of understanding, skills, and behaviours
