Course description

This course will introduce you to the relevance of adequate management of 'improved' water, sanitation and hygiene as it serves as a control intervention to improve public health and quality of life, as well as maintain human dignity. This course will further provide an understanding of the important consideration in selecting appropriate technologies for water and sanitation.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This training is suitable for engineers, scientists, social scientists, programme managers, development workers and other professionals that want to obtain or increase knowledge on public health, water, sanitation and hygiene.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Public health within the context of WASH contributes to reducing the causes of ill-health and improving people's health and wellbeing by protecting them through the provision of effective, efficient and accessible interventions.  In this session, we will introduce the relationship between water, health and disease as well as the key public health issues around WASH, risks and relevance of interventions as well as a critical appreciation of their applicability within different scenarios.

Training Course Content

Core content

  • Identify the principal transmission routes of water and excreta-related diseases,
  • Explain the difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases,
  • Describe and classify the pathogens that cause water related diseases; and further classify communicable diseases and their transmission route,
  • Explain the role of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) beyond diarrhoea, and with regard to disease emergence, combatting COVID-19 and in preparing for future pandemics.
