During this one-hour, e-learning course, you will begin your payroll journey by learning about the PAYE tax system, processing some simple income tax calculations, understanding more about the various tax codes and learning how the tax year operates.
The course is suitable for participants that have the following suggested roles of newly employed:
- Payroll administrators
- Payroll co-ordinators
- HR administrators
- HR co-ordinator

On this course you will learn:
- Pay as you earn (PAYE) tax system
- Tax rate and tax bands
- Non-taxable elements of pay
- Cumulative and non-cumulative operations of PAYE
- Using HMRC tax tables
Courses are delivered using the CIPP's online learning management system. Once registered for the course, you will be introduced to the topics covered throughout the hour and the course learning outcomes. Learning is achieved via a step-by-step process throughout the module, with a short test at the end of each topic, ensuring you have a full understanding of the course.
Once all topics have been completed, you'll be presented with a link to download your learning resources, including the module workbook. You'll also be taken through the learning outcomes once again with the opportunity to revisit any of the topics covered.
The course material will be provided on the date that you have booked, and you will have three weeks from this date to complete.

The e-learning course guides you through:
- What is the pay as you earn system
- How the tax year operates
- Identify how tax rates and bands differ across the UK
- What are non-taxable elements of pay
- Personal allowances
- Identify different tax codes and how the payroll department is notified about them
- Identify the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative operation of PAYE
- Manually calculate an employees tax using the tax tables
Continuing Studies
Calculating National Insurance Contributions
In this second eLearning module, you will continue your payroll learning journey and discover key terms and phrases as well as gain an understanding of National Insurance Codes and work through some simple calculations.
Introduction to Income Tax & NICs
Working knowledge of PAYE & NICs is the central skill set that all payroll professionals must master. This trainer-led course covers in-depth the rules for calculating both statutory deductions as well as the principles of calculating gross pay, administering starters and leavers and the importance of the pay statement.
Introduction to Payroll
Designed for those beginning their payroll journey, this comprehensive course covers all the core skills required to administer the payroll function. From calculating gross pay and deciphering the differences between taxable and NICable pay. The course covers in-depth the methodologies for manually calculating income tax, NICs and Student Loan Deductions as well as an overview of other core payroll principles, including auto-enrolment, court orders and remittance reconciliations of processing starters and leavers correctly. You will leave the course with the ability to calculate gross to net manually.
