BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion Design & Textiles (2 Years):

What will I learn?

There are many gaps in the fashion industry; in particular there is shortage of great pattern cutters along with meticulous sewing skills and an understanding of the design process.

This fashion design and technology course will guide and nurture your talents adopting confidence in the production of garments and technical skills as well as design development for a range of outcomes and market areas. You will learn to create your own blocks, pattern cutting, designing and adapting new pattern ideas, construct and fit garments, applying adjustments to style and design; whilst keeping within a budget.

There will be emphasis on fabric sourcing, identifying a range of different fabrics for different needs. You will be advised to go to trade shows to source new fabrics and make contacts.

The course is project base, but also provides you the ability to demonstrate good team playing skills. This course is suitable for all those wanting to work in the design industry, start their own design business or work as a pattern cutter or garment technologist.

How will I be taught?

You will study a range of art, craft and design topics through project work. These projects will require you to be able to plan, produce simple evidence of research, come up with ideas and make a simple product (e.g. poster, model, illustrated report etc.) You will have to work to tight deadlines using private study time as well as timetabled lessons. You will learn many basic skills and techniques. All students are expected to provide a basic set of equipment and materials.

How will I be assessed?

All of the assessment is through coursework and college set assignments which once assessed is also moderated by the exam board.

What can I do after this course?

Progress to the Extended Diploma in Fashion Design is recommended to achieve the full programme and access to H.E.
