Course description

Technical Author Core Skills Training - 1-day Introductory course

This 1-day comprehensive Introduction to technical authoring course has been designed to provide a grounding in technical authoring principles and writing styles appropriate to user documentation.  

Specifically, delegates will learn skills in analysing your audience, structuring and designing documents, writing using plain English and avoiding standard errors in punctuation and grammar.

This is a practical and 'activity-based' course that makes extensive use of practical exercises to give candidates the opportunity to gain experience in the techniques taught.

This course is part of a module comprising the Technical Authoring training programme, which is accredited by the ISTC. More experienced professionals may choose to also take the intermediate and advanced modules.

Training is provided by highly experienced instructors, all of whom have 20+ years of experience in technical authoring.

This Introduction to technical authoring course has been designed for new technical authors and writers looking to develop advanced technical authoring skills. It is also ideal as a stand-alone course for anyone who needs to begin carrying out technical authoring work, including: 

  • Career technical authors who haven't received any formal training.
  • People who are considering technical authoring as a profession.
  • Those who are not career technical authors but have been asked to carry out technical authoring work as part of their role.

Pre-requisites

Delegates should have a working knowledge of Microsoft® Windows® and basic word processing techniques. No prior technical authoring knowledge is necessary.

Technical Authoring e-Certificate

Upon completion of this Introduction to technical authoring course, delegates receive an e-certificate confirming that they have attended and successfully completed the course.

  • Why good writing is important and the costs of documentation.

Know your audience

  • Understand and prioritise the different categories of your audience and handle different levels of reader.
  • Research the basic tasks of your audience.

How to structure your documents

  • Understand which sections to include in your manuals and the order in which they should be placed.

Write from a design

  • Use mind mapping techniques for designing a document.
  • Learn how to plan the content of your document before you start writing.

Skills of writing – 12 golden rules

  • Learn the 12 golden rules of writing to help you develop a clear and concise style.
  • Use readability checking and testing techniques.

Punctuation and grammar

  • Understand the basics of punctuation and grammar.
  • Avoid the six most frequently made errors that occur in writing.

Document layout

  • Understand the basics of layout and typesetting.
  • Learn how to format your document for maximum impact.

Reviewing and proof reading

  • How to check your documentation to ensure it is error free.
  • Use industry standard techniques for reviewing, rewriting and proof reading.
