About the course/ What will this course help you achieve?
This course has been designed to teach you the skills and techniques to turn every picture into a piece of art. As a beginner to framing you will learn what materials and tools are required to make the perfect picture frame as well as how to enhance your artwork through impactful mounts.
What will the course cover?
During this two day event you will learn:
Day 1:
You will be taken through the complete process of designing, planning and making a frame for one of your pictures. You will amaze yourself with the professional quality and creative style you can achieve starting from scratch.
Through clear explanation, demonstration and your hands-on practice, you will learn about:
✓Everything you need to get started making frames!
✓Identifying the key elements of a framed picture.
✓How to cut a mount using specialised tools, for the mounting of a picture.
✓Basic methods for attaching a picture to the mount.
✓Cutting picture mouldings and joining them to create a frame for the mounted picture.
✓Cutting the glass and backboard to fit the frame.
✓Assembling the framed picture, including sealing the picture back and adding a hanging cord.
Day 2:
The second day of this course solely focuses on the different techniques of mount cutting. Mounting cutting is often the place where framing can achieve the most impact and increase the perceived value of any art form is through mount design and decoration. Whether producing framed work for hanging at home or for sale, you will be amazed at the effects achieved. In short, this day will provide the perfect launchpad for an exciting, more dramatic way of presenting your images.
The day is both for complete beginners and for those who need hands-on experience to help them create a dramatic, unique look for their artwork or photography. We will cover a range of practical skills and understanding of products used in mount cutting and decoration, and over the day you will produce a portfolio of mounted artwork.
Through clear explanation, demonstration and your hands-on practice, you will learn about:
✓How to choose the right mount & style for your artwork.
✓How to measure and plan your projects.
✓A range of cutting techniques using a mount cutting system.
✓How to cut single mount, double mount & shadow mounts using a mount cutting system.
✓How to plan & cut a multi-aperture mount with several openings for a group of photos.

Suitability - Who should attend?
What previous experience should I have?
The workshop is aimed at complete framing beginners as well as those who may have framed a little of their work before. There is no need for any experience of using hand tools, although any experience you do have will be a bonus!
In particular, the course is aimed at people who;
✓Have limited or no previous experience of working with hand tools.
✓Have some experience of mounting and framing pictures, but no experience of using the specialised tools available to framers.
✓ Want to receive support in honing current skills.
✓Want to use graphic art as part of home improvement or refurbishment.

Course delivery details
This course is hosted by The UK School of Framing alumni at venues across the UK.
Equipment for the day is provided, well maintained and shared amongst the students, you are encouraged to support and share any tips you have with each other.
Our courses are intended to be enjoyable, educational and collaborative learning experiences, there’s no stress from tests or assessments at the end of the day. We hope you leave with the satisfaction of building and learning something new.
High Wycombe:
Courses are run with a maximum of 10 students. Starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm, there will be a 30 minute lunch break and a few short refreshment breaks.
Please be aware our High Wycombe venue is a little bit out of town so we advise bringing a packed lunch or you may miss out on the great opportunity to get to know your fellow students over lunch!
Expenses
What do I need to Bring with me?
The venue is located outside of the town centre and access to food vendors is limited. To keep the course running on time for all students, we request that students bring a packed lunch with them.
1 x photo or picture no larger than an A4 sheet of paper to frame.
Suitable clothing for a workshop environment:
- No open toe shoes or sandals
- No long floaty sleeves or garments which could get caught on things
- Do not wear anything of value as we are working with glues and paints etc.
- Do wear comfortable footwear as we are standing for most of the day.
