Course description
The theatrical makeup industry is exciting and fast-paced. There is a need for those with creative flair, attention to detail and fantastic people skills.
If you have ambitions to enter the media makeup sector in film, theatre, or television, our programmes are for you. You'll need practical ability, a knowledge of fashion and beauty trends, and a passion to work hard and succeed.
Our programmes cover the essentials of client care and consultation, we will also develop your skills in specialist areas such as dressing and styling hair, making and applying prosthetics, designing and making body art, and applying quality make-up for fashion photography, TV, film and theatre.
Students also have the opportunity to work in our industry-standard salons at our campuses, take part in exciting on-location shoots and performances, and undertake work-based projects with leading industry employers.
On completion of this course, you could progress to :
- Level 3 hair and media make -up
- Level 2 beauty
- Level 2 hair
- Self-employed hair and make-up artist

Suitability - Who should attend?
You need a minimum of four GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above, including maths and English or functional skills Level 1 in maths and English.
You will also need a good school report, showing at least 95% attendance.

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. A good school report or reference and a successful interview are also required.
All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.
It is essential to purchase personal equipment and salon work wear costing approximately £600.
Training Course Content
The modules you will cover on this course are:
- 201: principles of working in the industry to include health and safety
- 202: anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
- 203: principles of researching, planning and showcasing designs
- 204: the art of applying make-up
- 205: hair artistry
- 206: creative make-up artistry
You will be required to participate in employer engagement at various stages throughout the course. We work with Kryolan, Crown and other industry specialists.
You will be required to complete work experience 1 day a week in a related environment.
Course delivery details
The course combines practical and theory with research in a realistic working environment.
You will begin by working on each other and progress to working on models. You will work on a range of models of different ages, gender and ethnicity to develop your abilities to work on all clients.
There is a two-hour theory exam in March, and you will have one opportunity to resit.
Practical assessments throughout the course, with two days of synoptic practical exams including a seven-hour controlled assessment to include planning of the looks, research and treatment planning of the looks to be created.
