Course description

This course is suitable for anyone who enjoys working outside and is considering a career in landscape construction, or those already working in the industry who want to gain a recognised landscaping qualification.

This course covers the basic principles of hard landscape construction including fencing, paving and brickwork. You will also be instructed in the safe use of landscape machinery.

Topics include:

  • Establish and maintain plants outdoors
  • Understand the basic principles of plant science
  • Setting out from a plan
  • Construct and maintain garden fences
  • Construct garden walls
  • Construct landscape foundations and surfaces
  • Introduction to landbased machinery operations
  • Undertake work related work experience

At Merrist Wood we have over forty years of experience in providing specialist training in landscape construction and amenity horticulture and coupled with our award-winning Learning Philosophy, we are able to offer a practical education, tailored to your needs. Practical work is carried out in our dedicated landscape workshops which are fully equipped for the modern landscape. The college grounds are extensive and tuition is provided by skilled and experienced tutors with close industry links.

Suitability - Who should attend?

You will need 2 to 4 GCSEs at grades 2 – 3 (grade D – E) or above, or a Level 1 qualification or relevant practical experience in the landscape industry.
3 years working in the industry.

Students aged 16-18 can also consider applying for Horticulture Level 2, which is a full-time course and opt for the Landscaping modules within that programme.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

You could progress to a Level 3 course in horticulture or landscape construction at Merrist Wood or landscape jobs in the industry at craftsman level.

Course delivery details

The course is a mixture of hands-on (75%) practical and theoretical (25%) sessions. Homework: Some completion of assignments and portfolios will need to be done outside the course.
