PRINCE2® Courses: The Methodology

PRINCE2® is a process-based project management approach that is distinguished by its truly generic nature, meaning that it can be applied to any project regardless of type, scale, organsiation, culture or geography.

But what makes it so widely applicable?

The key is in the ability to separate the management aspects of project work from the specialist elements such as construction or design. As a result, the specificities of any project can be easily integrated with the PRINCE2® methodology to provide a solid overall framework for its completion, from planning through to assessment. Additionally, PRINCE2® works well in conjunction with other programme management methods such as MSP.

The key features of PRINCE2® are:

  • an emphasis on business justification
  • a clearly defined organisational structure for the PM team
  • a product-based planning approach
  • a focus on splitting the project into a number of manageable and controllable stages
  • flexibility that is applicable at the right level for the project

There are two PRINCE2® qualification levels: PRINCE2® Foundation and PRINCE2® Practitioner. PRINCE2® courses will usually result in one or both of these qualifications.

PRINCE2® Foundation Courses

The PRINCE2® Foundation is the beginner level qualification and is thus aimed at people who need to learn the basics and terminology of PRINCE2®. Foundation PRINCE2® courses generally have a duration of 3 days and comprise the relevant examination. This means that participants will generally leave their PRINCE2® courses in possession of the Foundation certificate, which is a pre-requisite for certification at the Practitioner level.

PRINCE2® Practitioner Courses

The PRINCE2® Practitioner is the higher level qualification, suitable for those responsible for managing projects within a tailored PRINCE2® environment. Practitioner PRINCE2® courses have an average duration of 2 days, but are often combined with the Foundation syllabus in a comprehensive 5-day programme for candidates wishing to move directly to this level. These PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner courses cover the entire Foundation and Practitioner syllabuses and include both of the examinations. Delegates are thus able to leave the training as fully certified Practitioners, enhancing their project management skills and adding significant value to their careers as project managers.

All PRINCE2® Practitioners are urged to re-register within 3-5 calendar years of their original certification via an apposite PRINCE2® Re-Registration Examination. PRINCE2® courses are available for requalification. PRINCE2® qualifications can be undertaken in an online, open course or in-house project management training programme.

Course Format of PRINCE2 Courses

PRINCE2® courses can be found all over the UK in the form of classroom, online, or in-house to suit the needs of every professional.

Classroom

A classroom course will take place at a designed time and location. This is a great option for the individual who wants to take training into their own hands or a small business who just needs to have a few employees trained.

In-house

If you are an organisation with a large number of employees who need training, in-house training might be for you. Search through courses for a trainer who can bring expert in-house training to you and your employees.

Online

Online training is an option for those who favour flexibility. Individuals can participate in the course at their own pace and on their own time.
