Therapeutic Counselling ABC Diploma Level 4
This course is for people wishing to train to become professional counsellors. The course content consists of: Year 1: Advanced counselling skills, Person-centred counselling theory and practice, Ethical and professional issues, and Personal development. Year 2: Diversity, Supervision, Research, Personal development and Integrating theory into practice.
You will have continuous internal and external assessment involving case studies, observed practice, presentations and academic assignments. You will be required to submit a portfolio at the end of the course for external assessment. There is a two night weekend residential each year for all counselling students. You will carry out a counselling placement of 100 hours of one-to-one work with clients; you will be supervised on your placement to meet the course requirements. The course requires each student to undergo personal therapy.

Suitability - Who should attend?
An interview is essential and you must hold a level 3 counselling-related qualification or equivalent. You will also need to complete and submit some pre-interview tasks along with your application.

Training Course Content
You will study seven units:
- Professional organisational units in counselling
- You will develop an understanding of the essential relationship between counsellors, as professionals, and the organisations and other people with which they may work. You will explore areas of potential conflict, especially through the existence of different ethical standards and principles. You will also reflect on the importance of managerial supervision and casework supervision.
- Counselling in a diverse society
- You will explore the impact diverse culture and heritage can have on the client/counsellor therapeutic relationship in a multicultural society. You will also examine power issues within the counselling process.
- Counselling theory
- You will analyse one major therapeutic model to influence, inform and empower your practice as a counsellor. You will also compare other therapeutic models with the major model.
- Advanced counselling skills
- You will demonstrate a range of skills illustrating your development as a practitioner. In addition, you will learn that counselling is a managed activity, with emphasis being given to the importance of opening and closing sessions and a series of sessions.
- Self-awareness for counsellors
- This unit aims to enable you to increase self-awareness by analysing and evaluating the impact that counselling theory and practice has on self and relationships.
- Research methodologies in counselling
- You will explore the importance of research in counselling. You will develop your research skills and will learn how to present findings.
- Counselling placement
- You will complete this unit linked to supervised counselling placement practice. You will analyse how your theoretical approach has influenced their practice, and evaluate learning gained from supervision.
